Compress PDF

Tidy the file structure, or rebuild pages as images, and see the real size change.

Runs in your browser. Your files are not uploaded.

Image rebuild

Repack keeps the real text and only tidies how the file is stored. An image rebuild turns each page into a JPEG, so the text can no longer be selected. Neither step is Ghostscript, and a file that does not shrink is reported as no saving.

How to use it

  1. Add one PDF. The size on disk is shown before anything else happens.
  2. Choose Repack PDF to tidy the file structure, or Rebuild pages as images if the file is mostly scans or photos.
  3. Read the before and after sizes. Download only if the change is the one you wanted.

Two different kinds of smaller

Your files never leave this browser tab. Repack copies the PDF through the same library that merges files, with object streams turned on. Text stays selectable. Pictures are not resampled. A text-heavy file sometimes shrinks, and sometimes it grows.

Rebuild draws every page as a JPEG and makes a new PDF from those pictures. That can shrink a scan or a slide deck full of photos. It also throws away selectable text, links and form fields. The quality slider and the page scale belong to this path only.

A longer explanation of when each path is worth it is in How to reduce a PDF’s file size.

What this page will not pretend

There is no Ghostscript and no MuPDF here. Those tools can recompress images inside the PDF and still leave the text as text. This page does not. If the new file is the same size or larger, the result says “no saving” and gives the measured numbers.

Password-protected files are refused. Unlock the PDF on your device first. Very large files stop at 80 MB so the tab stays usable.

Questions

Why did the file get bigger?

Repacking rewrites the structure. A PDF that was already tightly saved can come out a little larger. The page shows that increase and does not call it a saving.

Will I still be able to copy the text?

After a repack, yes. After an image rebuild, no. The rebuild is a picture of each page.

Are the sizes estimated?

No. Both numbers are the byte length of the file you added and the file the tool just made.
